Bubka Breaks Indoor Pole Vault Record

Sergei Bubka of the Soviet Union broke his own indoor world record in the pole vault Tuesday night in Turin, Italy, clearing 19 feet, 7 inches.
It marked the second time this year that Bubka has broken the record.
He cleared 19-6 1/2 in January in Osaka, Japan, to better his own world indoor best of 19-6 set in 1986.
Bubka is the only vaulter to hold the world indoor record. The International Amateur Athletic Federation first began recognizing indoor world records this year.
Bubka, who won the first World Indoor championship two weeks ago with a vault of 19-4, is also the outdoor world record-holder at 19-8 1/2, a height he cleared in 1986.
Bubka first came to prominence in 1983 when he won the first outdoor world championship in Helsinki, Finland.
He set his first of six outdoor world records in 1984 with a vault of 19-2.
