U.S. Funding of the Contras

Well, there they go again!
Jeane Kirkpatrick’s diatribe (Editorial Pages, March 1) against Sen. Christopher J. Dodd’s (D-Conn.) opposition to U.S. funding of the contras in Nicaragua seems to miss the fundamental point: Aside from sheer Reagan Administration-led arrogance, what gives the United States the right to contribute militarily to the attempted overthrow of a foreign government?
Does this Administration have any conception of, let alone respect for, a country’s inherent right to self-determination?
Furthermore, the wanton destruction that the contras have unleashed upon Nicaragua and its citizenry makes it all the more appalling that Reagan deifies these power-lusting thugs as some sort of shining pillars of freedom.
If that’s democracy in action, pass me the barf bag.
