Ferenc Salbert of France won the Masters pole vault at Grenoble, France with a national indoor record of 19-4 as world record-holder Sergei Bubka of the Soviet Union failed to place.
Bubka failed to clear his opening height of 19-0. Billy Olson of the United States also failed to clear a height.
Second place went to another Frenchman, Philippe Collet, at 19-0. American Earl Bell tied for third with Atanas Tarev of Bulgaria at 18-8.
Salbert, 27, won $15,500, plus a bonus of $1,550 for setting a meet record. Collet won $7,250 and Bell and Tarev each earned $2,500.
