The City Council has approved the purchase of a new helicopter for Lakewood’s Sky Knight aerial patrol program.
The new aircraft, a 300-C Schweizer / Hughes, will cost $176,754, according to Sandi Ruyle, assistant to the city administrator. The cost will be divided among the six cities that contract with the Lakewood sheriff’s station--Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, Paramount and Lakewood.
Sky Knight, a city-run program started in 1966, is based at the Lakewood sheriff’s station and is manned by a civilian pilot and a sheriff’s deputy who patrol the area seven days a week.
Earlier this year, the six cities approved a five-year agreement to continue Sky Knight and fund a portion of the program.
