USD 7, UCSD 3--Chuck Graham’s pinch-hit single in the eighth inning broke a 3-3 tie at the University of San Diego.
Graham’s hit scored Parris Sorianello. Before the inning was over, Andy Roberts hit a three-run home run to put the game out of reach.
UCSD (9-7) took a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning, but USD’s Sean Daron hit a two-run home run to tie the score.
Roberts was 2 for 5 with 4 RBIs and Daron was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs for USD (11-6). Jim Westlund (1-0) was the winner. Thad Ferre was 3 for 4 for UCSD.
USIU 10, CS Long Beach 4--Steve Hendricks’ two-run home run in the seventh inning put United States International University ahead to stay, 5-4, at USIU.
Hendricks’ blast started a five-run inning in which USIU (8-14) turned a 4-3 deficit into an 8-4 lead. Gerry Benavides had a three-run double in that inning.
Bob Esquerra was 3 for 5 for USIU, and Mike Poteet (2-5) scattered two hits in five innings to gain the win. Brian Leonard suffered through the seventh inning and took the loss for the 49ers (5-16-1).
