A 33-year-old man sitting in the street was run over and killed Monday, police said.
Witnesses told police that Sherwood Wanggaard, a transient, was apparently intoxicated when he decided to sit in a northbound lane of 4th Avenue about 7:30 p.m., police dispatcher Diana Drummey said. At least one vehicle avoided hitting Wanggaard, but a car driven by an 18-year-old man struck the victim. The driver was not cited.
Wanggaard was pronounced dead at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Chula Vista, police said.
