A Plaque Near the White House

John Balzar’s interesting article, “Mr. Gallegly Goes to Washington” (Feb. 1), leads off with that wonderful “invented city” quote but tells us nothing about what sort of “sidewalk inscription” it is. Scratched into the concrete? Graffiti? A plaque? Where? Anybody know what poet composed it? Drop the other shoe, please.

The quote is from the poem “Washington, D.C.,” by Ernest Kroll. It is inscribed in granite at Western Plaza, a few blocks from the White House.
