Site--Sports Arena.
Time--12:30 p.m.
Records--Calipatria 21-1; La Jolla Country Day 22-3.
Last meeting--Calipatria, 78-58 (January).
Calipatria update--The Hornets may not be big, but they have been virtually unbeatable, losing only to El Camino, which is in the 2-A final. Forwards Mario Ortiz and Alfonso Romero, both 5-10, average more than 15 points a game. Forward Robert Romero has averaged 11 points as a reserve. Sean Taylor, the Hornets’ 6-1 1/2 center, averages 10 rebounds a game.
La Jolla Country Day update--When the Torres lost to Calipatria earlier this season, Coach Bill Cahoone said his team, which has since won 17 straight, was not itself. Guards Ron Nan and Todd Glick were held scoreless. Reserve forward Evan Skowronski, who has since averaged 15.5 points a game, was recovering from mononucleosis and was 0 for 9 from the floor. But the key player for La Jolla Country Day is 6-4 forward Phil Holoubek, who has led the team with 25.5 points and 11 rebounds a game.
Key to the game--La Jolla Country Day will try to use Holoubek, forward Brad Moores and 6-7 center Jason Belice to control the boards and prevent Calipatria from getting the ball to Ortiz and Alfonso Romero.
