Iran said its forces battled Iraqi troops in two widely separated sectors of their war front after advancing to new positions in the south and repelling three Iraqi counterattacks in the north. Iran said 1,200 Iraqis were killed or wounded in the fighting near Fish Lake, east of Basra. But Iraqi military communiques issued in Baghdad said Iraqi troops “crushed an attack” by four brigades of Iranian troops in the Basra sector.
