A man undergoing psychiatric treatment for depression bludgeoned his mother to death and then committed suicide by shooting himself in the head, Newport Beach police said. Investigators believe John Hartford McMullin, 34, struck his mother, Harriet Barding McMullin, 63, with a blunt instrument then took his own life Sunday in the town house they shared in an exclusive neighborhood along Newport Bay, Officer Kent Stoddard said. McMullin is also believed to have killed the family’s dog by slitting its throat.
