South Africa’s two largest English-language newspaper groups asked the Supreme Court in Johannesburg to invalidate a police order banning most news, comment and advertising concerning outlawed organizations. The government ordered the ban last week after advertisements were placed in newspapers to mark the 75th anniversary of the African National Congress. The court challenge, filed by South African Associated Newspapers and the Argus Co., was postponed until Jan. 23.
