Big 3 Auto Sales Plunge 38.7%

DETROIT — Domestic car sales by the top three U.S. auto makers fell 38.7% in early January from a year ago as dealers nationwide began paying back for the tax-fueled spurt of December sales, companies reported today.
Industry leader General Motors Corp.’s sales were down 39% from the year-ago period. Ford Motor Co.’s sales were down 39.2%, and Chrysler Corp.’s sales dropped 36.4%.
