North County : Chino Hills State Park to Hold Open House

Southern California’s newest state recreation area, Chino Hills State Park, will hold an open house Saturday featuring guided nature walks, trail rides and wagon rides through Aliso Canyon.
The open house for the 9,735-acre reserve in the hills east of Brea and Yorba Linda will be hosted by the park’s volunteer mounted assistance unit. The free event is intended to introduce visitors to the new park, which covers parts of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
The park’s rolling hills, grasslands and oak woodlands are home to many wildlife species, including deer, badgers, bobcats, coyotes, snakes and birds. The preserve is intended to protect a slice of Southern California wilderness in the midst of an expanding urban area.
Chino Hills boasts one of largest native populations of California walnut trees and provides ample room for equestrians, hikers and picnickers to find solitude.
The open house will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guided trail rides will leave at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. (bring your own horse); nature walks will start at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. There also will be a slide show on the park’s history and development, and wagon rides.
The park can be reached by taking the Corona Expressway (California 71) to Pomona Rincon Road. Watch for a brickyard, then follow the adjacent dirt road west through Bane Canyon.
