No TV on Papua New Guinea Until ’88

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea — The Papua New Guinea government rushed laws through Parliament today to prevent the introduction of television into the South Pacific country until January, 1988.
The legislation, which was passed without debate, provides for a penalty of up to $1 million for any person found guilty of operating a television station before that time.
The legislation will give the government time to form a “clear and logical policy based on the facts,” Communications Minister Gabriel Ramoi told Parliament.
He said it would be reckless and dangerous to allow the introduction of television without proper guidelines and controls in place.
“We don’t want to be made into Americans or Australians,” he said.
