Illinois Gov. Thompson to Debate Stevenson

CHICAGO — Gov. James R. Thompson said Wednesday that he would debate third-party gubernatorial candidate Adlai E. Stevenson III.
The action by the Republican governor was hailed by Stevenson spokeswoman Terry Stephan. “We’ve been waiting for months,” she said. Stevenson was nominated as the Democratic candidate for governor in the March 18 primary, but he withdrew from the ticket after two supporters of radical politician Lyndon H. LaRouche Jr. were nominated for lieutenant governor and secretary of state.
