Lady’s Secret, the only mare in a field of seven, led from wire-to-wire to win the $292,500 Whitney Handicap by 4 1/2 lengths Saturday at Saratoga Race Course.
Lady’s Secret, 4-year-old daughter of Secretariat and a leading candidate for Horse of the Year, raced the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49 4/5 over a track turned sloppy by a mid-afternoon thunderstorm.
Lady’s Secret, ridden by Pat Day, paid $4.60, $3.80 and $3.80 as the favorite of the crowd of 43,250.
Ends Well finished second, 3 lengths ahead of Fuzzy, who was running with Lady’s Secret as part of a Wayne Lukas-trained entry.
Skip Trial, the 7-5 second choice, was fourth, eight lengths back.
