No new negotiations were planned as pickets stood outside the gates of USX Corp. steel mills for the second day of a work stoppage by 22,000 United Steelworkers members. “Everything’s fairly peaceful,” USX spokesman Tom Farrell said in Pittsburgh. All 16 plants of the company--formerly U.S. Steel Corp.--in nine states were shut down when the union’s contract expired at midnight Thursday. “The mood right now is determined, unified and relieved in the sense that at least we now know we’ve got a fight,” said Gary Hubbard, union spokesman. USX seeks to reduce its labor costs by up to $3.50 an hour from the current $25.20 while the union has proposed a wage freeze and a small reduction in health benefits.
