TRASHING THE MOVIES

Wilmington asks of Sylvester Stallone’s “Cobra,” “Do people really write these movies?” As an employee of Warner Bros. script-processing department, whose job is to correct spelling, punctuation and format errors of these “nonexistent” entities, I can answer unequivocally:
Yes, there was a screenplay for “Cobra.” Those of us who polished it, however, do not assume responsibility for content.
It should come as no surprise that this tripe is actually written. Infantile writing has long been a Hollywood staple. In the 1930s, Ben Hecht wrote a short story called “Concerning a Woman of Sin,” about a hot new screenplay that turns out to have been written by a 6-year-old child.
Even more absurd: Today, it takes a small army of literate assembly-line workers--all adults--to make this kid’s stuff readable.
