Gompert, Gurney Advance in Singles

SAN DIEGO — No. 4-seeded Kate Gompert rallied to defeat Dinky Van Rensburg, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4, Friday in a quarterfinal match of the $75,000 Virginia Slims of San Diego women’s tennis tournament at the San Diego Hilton Beach & Tennis Resort.
In the other quarterfinal singles match, unseeded Melissa Gurney defeated No. 5 Betsy Nagelsen, 6-0, 6-4.
Gompert, trailing 2-1 in the third set, withstood three break points before winning to tie the set, 2-2. Three games later, Gompert broke Van Rensburg’s serve to take a 4-3 lead en route to the victory and today’s 11 a.m. matchup with No. 2-seeded Stephanie Rehe.
In a doubles quarterfinal match, the No. 4-seeded team of Beth Herr and Alycia Moulton defeated Cammie MacGregor and Cynthia MacGregor, 7-5, 7-6 (7-0). Elise Burgin and Rosalyn Fairbank beat Lea Antonopolis-Claudia Monteiro, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.
