The priest who baptized Kate Smith 22 years ago praised her “life of service” and led the congregation in singing “God Bless America” at a funeral mass for the singer in Washington. Father Albert Salmon of Ticonderoga, N.Y., eulogized Smith, who died Tuesday at age 79, as a woman of humility who kept her sense of humor through bouts with cancer and crippling diabetes. She will be buried at Lake Placid, N.Y.
