Bo Jackson called a news conference for today amid indications that he will play baseball for the Kansas City Royals.
A spokesman for Avron Fogelman, Royals co-owner, confirmed that team officials had met Friday with Jackson, who was taken by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the NFL’s No. 1 draft choice in April.
The news conference was set for noon (EDT) at Birmingham, Ala. Jackson would be the first Heisman Trophy winner not to attempt a pro football career since Peter Dawkins at Army in 1958.
Buccaneer owner Hugh Culverhouse had said earlier that he would make Jackson the highest-paid rookie in NFL history and is reported to have made a five-year, $7-million offer. The Royals reportedly offered a $5-million, five-year deal that includes a buyout provision if Jackson decides to return to football.
