A man who fired a semi-automatic rifle in an argument with another man and two women in Bell Gardens was killed by police early Friday after he climbed to a rooftop and pointed the weapon at them, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officers said.
He was identified by the coroner’s office as Kenneth Mayfield, 22, of South Gate.
Bell Gardens police were called to the 6600 block of Ira Street shortly before 4 a.m. and soon asked for help from the Bell-Cudahy Police Department. Mayfield reportedly refused orders to surrender and went to the roof.
Sheriff’s Deputy Drew Basey said officers took cover behind cars, but were “confronted by the . . . suspect” and fired at him. Mayfield was pronounced dead at the scene.
