The Army chose LTV Aerospace & Defense to design and produce the weapon, known as the Army Tactical Missile System. The initial award is for $180.4 million and covers full-scale engineering development, but the total value of the program is expected to be between $2 billion to $3 billion. Selection of LTV as winner of the competition over Boeing Aerospace concluded almost a decade of research aimed at developing a conventional surface-to-surface artillery missile capable of striking targets deep behind enemy lines.
