Eleven fencers representing the Salle Gascon Fencing...

Eleven fencers representing the Salle Gascon Fencing Club in Culver City did well in the U. S. Fencing Assn. Junior Olympics in St. Paul, Minn., according to Theodore Katzoff, Salle Gascon master-at-arms.

Top performer from the local contingent was Chris O’Loughlin of Los Angeles, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, who won a bronze medal in the under-age-20 epee division. Spense Thompson of Salle Gascon reached the quarterfinals in under-20 foil and the second round in the under-20 epee.

Under-20 foil--Geoff Russell, quarterfinals; under-16 foil--Nicky Bravin, fifth; Al Carter, sixth, and Kashi Way, 10th; under-16 epee, Kevin Werbach, 11th; Scott Kleinman, 12th, and Michael Ashley-Shulman, second round; under-16 saber, Michael Davidson, ninth; under-20 women’s foil, Chanel Summers, first round.

Michael Scott Rice, Yeshiva University High School basketball coach, was named coach of the year in the Westside League, and Derrick Thornton of Bel-Air Prep and David Gottlieb of Yeshiva were selected players of the year by league coaches.

All-league first-team selections were David Harrison of Yeshiva, Keith Price of Clearview, Derrick Hardwick of Newbridge and Franco Frisan of Bel-Air Prep. Second-team selections included Steve Hobb and Darrin Hirt, both of Yeshiva; Chris Wish of Newbridge and Sean Lewis of Bel-Air Prep.
