Philadelphia Transit Strike Ends

PHILADELPHIA — A tentative contract settlement was reached today to put striking city transit employees back to work, ending a five-day walkout that had idled buses, subways and trolleys for 400,000 daily commuters.
Many of the 5,000 drivers, cashiers, maintenance and other workers were expected to go back to work immediately with some transportation restored for the evening rush hour. Lewis Gould, chairman of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority, warned the settlement would cost commuters money, saying a base fare increase from $1 to $1.25 was probable.
