Long Beach : Council Rejects Rent Plan

The City Council rejected a request Tuesday by a group of mobile home residents that a measure be put on the November ballot to establish a rent stabilization law for the city’s trailer parks.
Councilman Wallace Edgerton proposed that the council support putting the measure on the ballot, but his motion died for lack of a second.
Residents from the Villa Park mobile home community say they will now begin a push to gather the thousands of signatures needed to qualify the initiative for the ballot.
Leaders of the tenant group, which represents about 400 Villa Park residents, say the law is needed because of ballooning rents being charged at mobile home parks throughout Long Beach. At Villa Park, for instance, rents have risen by as much as 40% during the past year.
