An Arleta man was shot to death by a Los Angeles police officer in a Van Nuys motel room after the man attempted to slash the officer’s partner with a kitchen knife, investigators reported. Lt. Charles Higbie said that Juan A. Toledo, 32, had forced himself into the room and confronted two women, who asked the manager to summon police and then fled after Toledo refused to leave. The arriving officers said they asked Toledo to drop the knife he was brandishing, Higbie said. When Toledo refused and attempted to attack one of the officers, the other officer opened fire, Higbie said.
