Don Mattingly, the New York Yankee first baseman who drove in 145 runs last season, was named the Major League Player of the Year by The Sporting News.
Mattingly batted .324 and hit 35 home runs. In addition, he led the majors with 48 doubles and the American League with 370 total bases and 86 extra-base hits. He led the league’s first basemen with a .995 fielding percentage to win his first Gold Glove award.
