Geology Prof. H. William Menard of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego will receive his profession’s highest honor today at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco.
Menard will receive the William Bowie Medal, given annually for outstanding contributions to geophysics and for cooperation in research. Menard’s research has included plate tectonics--the movement of large earth masses--and study of topographic and structural features of the sea floor.
The American Geophysical Union is the largest international society for earth scientists, with more than 17,000 members in 100 countries.
