Pope John Paul II convened a meeting of cardinals on reforming the Catholic Church goverment with a warning against any “aberrant” challenge to his papal powers. The Pope said the church curia, rather than being a parallel power as sometimes depicted remains only an “instrument and aid” that derives all its powers from the Pope. He was addressing 122 of the 150 members of the College of Cardinals preparatory t the beginning Sunday of a two-week-synod.
