Stars Urge Smokers to Snuff Out Habit on 9th ‘Smokeout’

NEW YORK — There were balloons, mimes, and celebrities on hand Wednesday to encourage smokers to take on one of the most difficult of tasks--quitting--during a rally to launch the Great American Smokeout.
The ninth annual day of abstinence was scheduled for today, when millions of people across the United States are expected to snuff out their cigarettes and cigars for at least 24 hours, if not for good.
The rally in the Park Avenue lobby of the Blue Cross Health Education Center was filled with helium ballons and a number of Broadway stars, who urged smokers to quit.
