Brian Propp and Pelle Eklund scored second-period goals to bring the Philadelphia Flyers from behind and lead them to their eighth consecutive win, 5-2, over the Rangers Wednesday night at New York.
A sellout crowd of 17,408 at Madison Square Garden anticipated a war in the first meeting of the teams since their bloody brawl in an exhibition game Oct. 1, but it never materialized. The Flyers concentrated on hockey, and there were no incidents.
Excellent goaltending by Bob Froese enabled the Flyers to keep their streak alive. The Rangers came out firing. They had 20 shots in the first 20 minutes and scored on two of them. In the last two periods, Froese stopped all 17 Ranger attempts. He has won all five games he has started this season.
There were 13 minor penalties called in the game. In their exhibition, there were 506 minutes of penalties called, and 22 players were thrown out.
The Flyers, who are 6-0 on the road this season, have defeated the Rangers 13 times in a row since the Rangers beat them on March 14, 1984.
Washington 4, Pittsburgh 1--Alan Haworth scored a goal in his seventh consecutive game, and Al Jensen stopped 38 shots to lead the Capitals at Pittsburgh. The Capitals lost Bob Carpenter (finger) and Scott Stevens (leg) on first-period injuries.
Haworth, who scored 23 goals in 76 games last season, has nine in the current seven-game streak.
New York Islanders 5, Toronto 4--Pat Flatley, who scored only two goals in the first 11 games, had four goals and assisted on the game-winner by Pat LaFontaine at Toronto. The Maple Leafs lost their ninth in a row.
Buffalo 7, Winnipeg 3--Goalie Daren Puppa, who shut out champion Edmonton in his NHL debut last week, gave up his first goal midway through the first period at Buffalo but improved his record to 2-0. Mike Foligno and Lindy Ruff each scored twice for the Sabres.
Detroit 4, St. Louis 2--In this game at Detroit, high-priced rookie Petr Klima scored his sixth goal and Gerard Gallant his eighth as the Red Wings, winless in their first nine games, extended their unbeaten string to four games.
Calgary 5, New Jersey 2--Carey Wilson and Steve Bozek scored goals less than four minutes apart in the second period at East Rutherford, N.J. to help the Flames extend their unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1). Bozek’s goal, which made it 3-1, came when the Flames were short-handed.
Montreal 3, Minnesota 3--Tom Kurvers scored on a shot from the top of the left circle with 6:46 remining in regulation at Bloomington, Minn., to earn a tie for the Canadiens. Kurvers’ goal was the only one in the last 46 minutes, including overtime.
