Government’s Sanctuary Case

The title of your editorial “The Sanctuary Case,” seems a bit misleading in view of the fact that “religious sanctuary” was a medieval doctrine that bears about as much validity to American jurisprudence as the Ptolemaic system does to modern astronomy.
What is at issue is how much meddling by well-meaning amateurs should be tolerated in the business of law enforcement.
The INS accurately postulates that Central Americans came to the United States for economic reasons. They come here mostly through Mexico and that is a country that tolerates their presence. Let them stay there.
