Savannah Slew, ridden by Bill Shoemaker, Sunday won the $82,900 Linda Vista Handicap for 3-year-old fillies by a head over Waterside in the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita.
It was the fourth stakes triumph for the daughter of Seattle Slew, who stayed close to the leaders until the stretch and then overhauled Waterside at the wire.
Savannah Slew raced the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42 2/5. As the second choice of the crowd of 41,000, she paid $9, $4.80 and $4.40. Waterside, ridden by Laffit Pincay Jr., returned $4.40 and $4.40, while Goldspell, under Ruben Hernandez, returned $4.
The win was the third on the program for the 54-year-old Shoemaker, who boosted his victory total to 8,496 while recording his 934th stakes triumph.
The victory, the fifth in eight career starts for Savannah Slew, was worth $49,150 plus a Breeders’ Cup award of $10,800 to owner Allen Poulson of Encino.
