A Philadelphia police officer testified that police gave members of the radical cult MOVE “every opportunity to escape” their burning row house, even if it meant risking the lives of fellow officers. Lt. Dominick Marandola also told a commission investigating the fiery May 13 battle, in which 11 members of the group died, that a male MOVE member shot at police as a woman and child fled the burning house. Marandola said he ordered two officers, despite the threat of fire, to remain in a house near the rear of the MOVE house to assist cult members if they tried to surrender.
