School District, Teachers Agree to 5.5% Pay Raise

The Glendale Unified School District, after four months of negotiations with the Glendale Teachers Assn., tentatively agreed Wednesday to raise teacher salaries by 5.5% for the 1985-86 school year.
The increases include a 3.5% cost-of-living raise and an extra 2% to compensate for the longer school days this year. Teachers will also receive a one-time bonus equal to 1.1% of their annual salary, which will reflect cost reductions in the district’s annual health insurance premiums.
The district also agreed to give teachers a one-time payment of up to 2% of their annual salary from the district’s expected $1.2-million share of revenues from the new state lottery. Payments to school districts from state lottery revenues begin in January.
Bilingual teachers will be paid an extra $75 a month if they have completed district language requirements, according to the agreement. Bilingual teachers who have completed a more extensive study of language and culture will receive an additional $50 to $100 a month.
The Glendale Board of Education is expected to ratify the agreement at Tuesday’s meeting.
