Tribune Co.’s third-quarter net income rose 14% to a record $31.9 million, compared to $27.9 million in 1984. Substantial profit improvements were achieved in each of the three major lines of business: newspaper publishing, broadcasting and entertainment and newsprint and forest products. Third-quarter results included a non-operating after-tax gain of $3.6 million from the sale of real estate and a newspaper distribution business in New York. The 1984 third quarter also had a non-operating gain of $8 million from the sale of real estate. Newspaper advertising revenue grew nearly 9% in the quarter to $225 million and was up 10% to $706 million in the first nine months.
