PHILHARMONIC GROUP LISTS PLANS FOR ITS 5TH SEASON

The New Music Group of the Los Angeles Philharmonic has announced its fifth season will begin Jan. 20 in the Japan America Theatre downtown.
John Harbison, new director of the ensemble, will conduct the opening concert, called “Exotic Texts” and featuring music by Harbison, former New Music Group leader William Kraft, Yehudi Wyner and Christopher Rouse.
The second concert of the season will be performed by Ensemble Intercontemporain, conducted by its leader, Pierre Boulez, in a program of works by Franco Donatoni, York Hoeller, Elliott Carter and Gyorgy Ligeti. The Feb. 13 concert will be at Royce Hall, UCLA.
Back at the Japan America Theatre on March 4, the New Music Group, conducted by Stephen Mosko, will play compositions by Roger Bourland, Andrew Imbrie and Edward Applebaum.
An April 7 program of works by Heinz Holliger will feature composer Holliger on oboe, oboe d’amore and piano, and soprano Phyllis Bryn-Julson. Closing the season on April 28, the ensemble will host conductor Daniel Kessner in a program called “Music From the Midwest” and offering works by John Eaton, Fred Lerdahl, William Albright and Salvatore Martirano.
In addition to these five subscription concerts, the ensemble also will offer a New Music America concert Nov. 4 at Japan America Theatre and will sponsor two performances of Boulez’s “Repons,” in its United States premiere, by the Ensemble Intercontemporain on Feb. 11 and 12 in Royce Hall.
