General Dynamics Corp. and the United Auto Workers negotiated in Warren, Mich., past a midnight contract deadline for nearly 5,000 workers at plants in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The defense contractor had proposed a 3% general wage increase and lump sum payments of 2% the first year, 4% the second year and 3.5% the third year. The UAW objected to the lump sum payment, in which workers would get a one-time payment based on their annual salary.
