2 Hospitalized After San Fernando Police Car, Auto Collide in Intersection

A 14-year-old Sylmar boy and an 18-year-old Canoga Park woman were hospitalized Saturday after the car being driven by the boy collided with a police car in a San Fernando intersection, police said.
San Fernando Police Sgt. Rico Castro said a 1978 Renault driven by the youth was traveling east on Maclay Avenue through the intersection of 1st Street at 4:30 p.m. when it was broadsided by a squad car being driven south on 1st Street by Officer John Maertz, 33.
Castro said both cars were badly damaged.
The boy and Martha Islas, a passenger in his car, were taken to Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills, where a spokeswoman listed their conditions as stable. Maertz suffered minor injuries and was not hospitalized, Castro said.
Witnesses said the youth ran a red light just before the accident, Castro said. An investigation is continuing.
