TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — Honduran air force planes strafed Nicaraguan artillery positions and ground troops and engaged a formation of military helicopters, destroying one, said a communique issued by the armed forces on national radio stations Friday night.
The communique said the Honduran air force planes attacked the Sandinista positions in retaliation for a Nicaraguan mortar attack earlier in the day on the Honduran side of the border. One Honduran soldier was killed and eight were seriously wounded.
Deputy Foreign Minister Tomas Arita Valle said the attack occurred about 10 a.m. near the border village of Espanolito.
In Managua, a Nicaraguan Interior Ministry official said the leftist Sandinista government had no information about the Honduran report.
