Rejecting a move to reopen the South Africa debate, University of California President David P. Gardner told Assembly Speaker Willie Brown that his request to reconsider the issue would be referred to a committee. Unless Brown can get a two-thirds vote of the regents, UC bylaws require that major issues first be heard by a committee, Gardner said. Brown on Aug. 22 asked the regents to take another look at his plan to divest the university’s investment holdings in firms that do business in South Africa.
