An 82-year-old man was killed Monday night outside his home after shooting at police responding to a call of shots being fired, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. Joseph Ezequial Aviles was standing in his doorway in the 6000 block of Hollenbeck Street holding a .38-caliber revolver when police arrived at 10:05 Monday, Sheriff’s Deputy Linda Edmonds said.
The police ordered Aviles to drop his gun. When he began shooting at them, police opened fire, hitting Aviles several times, Edmonds said. Aviles died at the scene. Huntington Park police asked the Sheriff’s Department to investigate the incident, Edmonds said.
