An attempt by the city to get citizens to keep vehicles off city streets on street-sweeping days apparently has failed. After a three-month trial, the number of cars left on streets on days designated for street sweeping has declined by only 12%.

Calendars had been mailed to households and businesses showing which nights vehicles should be removed to facilitate sweeping, which is done every other week. The issue arose after a questionnaire was sent to each household asking for opinions on overnight parking. Nearly 54% favored prohibiting overnight parking, while 35% favored restrictions.

The City Council is expected to decide next month whether to spend $35,000 to $40,000 to place signs listing parking restrictions on every street.
