Cavaliers Said to Be Interested in Getting Walton

Clipper center Bill Walton, who has told General Manager Carl Scheer that he wants to be traded to the Boston Celtics or another contending NBA team, reportedly could be heading to Cleveland.

Scheer said Tuesday night that negotiations with Boston are still stalled but that he has talked with “another club in our league” about acquiring Walton for a power forward. The Cleveland Cavaliers, whose coach, George Karl, is a friend of Walton’s, are interested.

“It is true that I’ve called teams other than Boston,” Scheer said. “I’m going to try to accommodate Walton. He had his mind set (about not playing for the Clippers). I told him we will do it if the deal fits in with what’s good for our franchise.

“I believe that Walton, although he denies it, is talking to Boston every day, trying to work something out. I got to believe they are preparing something to propose to me. Bill somehow thinks they are still interested. I haven’t talked to Boston in two weeks.”

Scheer said that Walton does not have a no-trade clause in his contract but will receive a “transfer fee” from the Clippers if he is traded to any NBA team other than the Lakers.
