A Would-Be Bride Files Soviet Protest

STOCKHOLM — A Swedish woman dressed in her white bridal gown camped outside the Soviet Embassy here Saturday, on a hunger strike to demand that her Soviet fiance be freed.

Marie-Anne Farrow, 30, said Soviet authorities detained journalist Valentin Jurov, then put him in a Moscow mental institution weeks before their July 5 wedding date.

The couple met last year when she was in Moscow as a tourist, she said, and they received official Soviet permission to marry. Since becoming engaged though, her fiance had lost his job.

“Now I realize what the hammer and sickle really stand for,” she said outside the embassy gate Saturday.”The hammer is to crush hearts and the sickle, to cut the bonds of love.”
