Italians Ban Harvest of Suspect Tomatoes

ROME — Italian authorities have banned the harvesting of 220,000 tons of tomatoes suspected of insecticide poisoning, Health Ministry officials said Saturday.
They quarantined 1,600 acres of tomatoes at Nola, near Naples, after allegations that the crop had been sprayed with Temik, a pesticide produced by Union Carbide. Temik can cause gastrointestinal problems but is not fatal.
