Gardena Proposes Wood Roof Ban

GARDENA — The City Council has introduced an ordinance that would ban wood shingle and shake roofs in the city.
Under the ordinance introduced last week, existing roofs would be affected only when more than half was being replaced. Community Development Director Hayward Fong said the 50% criterion already has been adopted by Los Angeles County.
Fong said wood shingle and shake roofs burn easily and create a fire hazard and that alternate materials do not necessarily cost more.
