World record-holder Matt Biondi won his second gold medal, taking the men’s 100-meter freestyle during the Pan Pacific swimming championships at Tokyo. Biondi, 19, of Moraga, Calif., was timed in 49.17 seconds, which is .22 off his recent world record. Biondi’s other gold medal was in the 50-meter freestyle.
The U.S. women’s relay team of Mary Wayte, Trina Radke, Laura Walker and Carrie Steinseifer broke the U.S. record for the 800-meter freestyle in 8 minutes 6.74 seconds. The previous record was 8:07.44, set in 1981.
