The Region : Marina del Rey Man Wins $1 Million

A radiologist from Marina del Rey has won $1 million in the Massachusetts state lottery. Richard I. Turkanis, 33, will receive $50,000 a year for 20 years, lottery spokesman David Ellis said. Turkanis’ father, Daniel, stood in for his son at the final drawing at the lottery commission’s headquarters in Braintree, Mass. The younger Turkanis was not available for comment, but his mother, Ruth, said from the family’s home in Swampscott, Mass., that the announcement was “unbelievable.” Ellis said Turkanis’ chances of winning the jackpot were about 8 million to 1. He is the sixth person this year to win $1 million in the lottery’s Big Money game.
